The Nitwit Movie Stars

P. Ramlee As Ramli · Directed By P. Ramlee

  • Nominated, Best Comedy — 9th Asian Film Festival, Seoul, 1962

In the fourth instalment of the Bujang Lapok films, the three bachelors try to make it as movie stars, but their naivety and inexperience provide hilarious results. Struggling to learn their new film scripts, they have to deal with the various pesky neighbours around them, and Ramli’s love interest, Salmah, played by P. Ramlee’s real-life wife, Saloma.

The film is a comical satire of the Malay film industry of the late 1950s to early 1960s. The plot revolves around the main trio attempting to become actors and break into the film business, and hence features a fictionalised look at the behind-the-scenes process of film-making during that time at the actual Malay Film Productions studio at Jalan Ampas, Singapore.

The line between reality and fiction is blurred as real film industry places are used, real film sets of previous Malay films are used for the film-within-the-film, and all the featured actors use their real-life names or derivatives thereof.
