Introduction

P. Ramlee, whose real name was Teuku Zakaria bin Teuku Nyak Puteh, was a renowned Malayan actor, filmmaker, musician, comedian and composer whose fame spread across what are now Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. He is widely regarded as an icon of Malay entertainment.

P. Ramlee began his career in 1948 with Malay Film Productions in Singapore. He reached the peak of his career there during the 1950s and early 1960s, but his fortunes declined after he moved to Kuala Lumpur in 1964 to work for Merdeka Film Productions. His work was undervalued in his final years; wider recognition in Malaysia came after his death.

P. Ramlee’s contributions to the Malay entertainment industry are seen as foundational, and many of his films are considered classics of Malay cinema. His films continue to captivate audiences to this day, among them Pendekar Bujang Lapok, Hang Tuah, Madu Tiga, Antara Dua Darjat, Ibu Mertua-ku, Anak-ku Sazali, Tiga Abdul, Sergeant Hassan, Seniman Bujang Lapok, Laksamana Do Re Mi, Nujum Pa’ Blalang, Ali Baba Bujang Lapok and Ahmad Albab. His songs, such as ‘Getaran Jiwa’, ‘Jeritan Batinku’, ‘Di Mana Kan Ku Cari Ganti’, ‘Aci Aci Buka Pintu’, ‘Bila Larut Malam’, ‘Dendang Perantau’, ‘Suara Takbir’, ‘Malam Bulan Dipagar Bintang’, ‘Tunggu Sekejap’, ‘Berkorban Apa Saja’ and ‘Engkau Laksana Bulan’, have stood the test of time and remain popular across generations.

In 2023, P. Ramlee’s legacy lives on as we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the passing of one of Malaysia’s most beloved and influential artists.
