The Do Re Mi Films

Do, Re and Mi, from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur

Do Re Mi 1966

Three luckless men meet in the city. Do (P. Ramlee), who neglects his wife for draughts at the coffee shop, tricks his in-laws into paying his debts and loses his marriage; Re (A.R. Tompel), house-husband to a nightclub singer, is thrown out by his wife; and Mi (Ibrahim Din), a bachelor, lives off a generous girlfriend. They come together when they catch a bag snatcher outside the labour office and, with money from Mi's sweetheart, go into business selling home-made cure-all medicine, until their customers fall ill and chase them out of town.

Nasib Do Re Mi 1966

On their endless travels, Do, Re and Mi try to save a young man, Lokman, from a gang, and are badly beaten for it. Sheltering in an empty house, they overhear the gang leader plan to have a village bomoh bewitch Lokman's sweetheart, Nora. Re poses as the bomoh and fools the gang, but the three are caught by the villagers as thieves until Nora and Lokman recognise them. Nora then feigns love for the gang leader while carrying a hidden transmitter; when its signal cuts out, the friends and Lokman storm the hideout, and the police arrest the gang.

Laksamana Do Re Mi 1973

P. Ramlee’s final film.

Do, Re and Mi, who treat the whole world as their home, are tried for living rent-free in a treehouse. Back on the road, they save Princess Buluh Betong (Dayang Sulu), who gives them three magic gifts: a flying mat, a telescope that shows whatever one thinks of, and a weapon that flies where it is told. With these they are made Laksamana of the kingdom of Pasir Berdamar and, sent to help a neighbouring kingdom, kill the invincible Pasola and rescue its princess. As all three claim her, the bachelor king of Pasir Berdengung marries her himself, leaving them heartbroken. It was P. Ramlee's last film, still showing when he died on 29 May 1973.
